Save Energy, Save Money, Stay Warm

As temperatures dip lower, families can save money and keep warm by making energy-efficiency improvements to their homes.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has released essential tips for saving energy and money this winter to help Americans best prepare and manage their energy usage in a variety of ways.

According to DOE, on average, energy-efficient improvements reduce heating bills by 32 percent, estimating a threefold return on money invested. DOE offers these tips to help families cut their energy consumption this winter:

Seal and insulate your home. Many insulating projects are inexpensive and easy enough for the average homeowner to complete. Filling air furnace leaks, adding more insulation and sealing off exposed ducts can sharply reduce heating and cooling bills.

Perform routine maintenance. Replace your home’s air filter every month. Hire a contractor to tune-up your heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) unit once a year. Regular maintenance will reduce immediate costs and help units last longer.

Install a programmable thermostat. A programmable thermostat will keep your home at a lower temperature when you are not home, helping to reduce your energy bills.

Conserve hot water. Air-dry dishes instead of running your dishwasher’s heat cycle, take short showers instead of baths and wash only full loads of dishes and clothes. Saving water also saves money on energy used to heat it. Turn down the thermostat on your water heater to 120 degrees F.

Look for ENERGY STAR appliances. DOE and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) created the ENERGY STAR program, which evaluates buildings and home products for energy efficiency. ENERGY STAR products meet strict guidelines and can help save money and energy. If every homeowner installed just five ENERGY STAR lightbulbs, America would save $8 billion a year in energy costs.

Watch your electronics. Turn off computers and monitors when you’re not using them. Plug TVs and DVDs into power strips, then turn off the power strips when home electronics are not in use.

I Want My Bailout Money !

January 12, 2009

Normally I am not a big fan of rap music, but Michael Adams of NaturalNews.com has come up with a rap\hip-hop song I really enjoyed and thought worth sharing with my readers.

Michael has put into words how he, and probably a lot more Americans feel about the government bail out of the big corporations with taxpayer money.

I believe it is time for us all to play by the same rules. Small business and the big corporations alike. You make bad decisions and it takes your business down, small business or large corporations…no bailout…you are out of business. Seems like I remember something about “beating a dead horse” that could apply to the auto industry and a lot of companies in the financial industries..

Give Michaels rap a listen. I am sure you will enjoy it.

Respect and Religion

December 30, 2008

Religion, has it been a blessing or a curse for our planet? How many wars have been fought, how many people have been killed? All in the name of religion. We have the Bible, the Koran, the Book of Mormon, just to name a few, that teaches how to live our lives.

Some of the information is good to follow in your everyday lives, no problem with that. But, when the religion prods you into trying to convert non-believers to the religion the problems arise.

Should we be fighting wars to impose our religious beliefs on other people? Whose religion is right? Can they prove it? I think not. If you want to prove it to me show me something besides a book that has been rewritten no telling how many times and translated umpteen times. That just doesn’t do it for a lot of people as far as convincing them the books are genuine and true.

A lot of the human race has advanced beyond the teachings of the old books. We don’t kill homosexuals anymore. We don’t stone adulterers to death. I take that back, some countries and religions still practice those archaic acts.

How many churches today really need the money they pull in from their congregation. Is enough so the pastor can drive a Mercedes enough. How about a Rolex? Should the preacher live in a mansion?

How many a “televangelist” has gone down in disgrace? We are talking here about the ones that should be setting the example for the congregation.

How many of the homeless and poor could have been helped if the money had been spent on them instead of the ostentatious churches that have been built in the name of God.

If you truly believe in the religious Bibles and God, you would have to agree the core beliefs reflect that you should help the needy. Sure some churches help the needy in some respect or another. What part of the budget goes for the building fund or helping the needy. I’m curious, are you? Especially when it comes to the televangelist.

Jesus spread his Gospel with foot power and word of mouth. Today, a lot of preachers think they need a satellite to get the word out.

Is there a God, is there life after death? Think about the religions that worshiped the sun. They really believed they were right also. The Sun was their God.

Me personally, I do believe in God. I have a hard time believing all that has been created by nature could possibly have happened by a freak accident. Do I believe that one religion is true while another is not? No, I cannot base my beliefs on any one religion. My beliefs are mine and mine alone. No one else probably believes exactly what I believe.

Should I be respected by others for my believes. I don’t know. I should be respected as another person on the planet. Why should I gain or lose any other respect just because of my beliefs?

What are your beliefs? Are they truly your own or are they what you have been taught by your parents and the religion they believed in?

Just something to think about. Nothing concrete here.

Below is a video of an atheist sharing his beliefs. I do not happen to share all of his beliefs but his opinion is interesting to say the least.

A Marine’s Christmas

December 14, 2008

‘Twas the night before Christmas, he lived all alone,
In a one bedroom house made of plaster and stone.

I had come down the chimney with presents to give,
And had to see just who in this home did live.

I looked all about, a strange sight I did see,
No tinsel, No Presents, Not even a tree.

No stocking by the mantle, just boots full of sand.
On the wall hung pictures, of a distant land.

With Medals and Badges, Awards of all kinds,
A sober thought, came to mind.

For this house was different, it was dark and dreary,
I found the home of a Marine, Once I could see clearly.

The Marine lay sleeping, silent, alone,
Curled up on the floor, In his one bedroom home.

The face was so gentle, The room in such disorder,
Not how I pictured, A United States Marine.

Was this the hero of whom I’d just read?
Curled up on a poncho, The floor for a bed?

I realized the families that I saw this night,
Owed their lives to these Marines, Who where willing to fight.

Soon around the world, children would play,
And grownups would celebrate, a bright Christmas day.

They enjoyed Freedom, each month of the year,
Because of these Marines, like the one lying here.

I couldn’t help wonder, how many lay alone,
On a cold Christmas Eve, In a land Far from home.

The very thought, brought a tear to my eye.
I dropped to my knees and started to cry.

The soldier awakened, and I heard a rough voice,
“Santa don’t cry, this life is my choice;
I fight for Freedom, I don’t ask for more,
My life is my God, My Country, My Corps.”

The Marine rolled over, and soon drifted to sleep.
I couldn’t control it, I continued to weep.

I kept watch for hours, So silent and still
And we both shivered from the cold night’s chill.

I didn’t want to leave on that cold, dark night,
This Guardian of Honor, so willing to fight.

Then the Marine rolled over, with a voice soft and pure,
Whispered, “Carry on Santa. It’s Christmas Day, All is Secure.”

One look at my watch, and I knew he was right.
Merry Christmas my friend, And to all a good night.

An upside American flag is video taped flying in Hawaii. This is the same McDonalds that was taped flying the American flag below the state flag and the McDonalds corporate flag.

What Happened To Ethics?

November 16, 2008

On Friday evenings someone is kind enough to throw a newspaper on the driveway. It is the little local paper, not the ones with thousands of ads, but the one with all of the local news you don’t see in the News Journal. In fact the paper is called “The Hometown News”.
Like most places we [...]

Treat People With Respect

November 14, 2008

While looking through the news today concerning respect I came across a letter to the editor posted on theLedger.com. A Mr. Jack Thiessen had paid a visit to the Veterans Affairs Administration in Lakeland Florida. His comment on the treatment he received at the facility is quite disheartening. After all, the people working at Veterans [...]
