Here is another example of problems in our society. We used to be taught respect for the law and the police when we were young . So, how are you supposed to teach respect for the police when you have the kind of treatment exhibited as is shown in the video below.
Back when I was young in the 60’s you could not buy a skateboard. They had not been invented yet. So what we did was take a 2X4 and put our metal skates on them to make a skateboard. The road was to rough to push the metal wheels down the road. So what we did was pull each other down the road with a bike and some rope. Kind of like water skiing on the pavement. Watch out if a wheel hit a pebble on the road. You were in for quite a nasty spill as soon as the wheel made contact. The skateboard would stop dead in its tracks, but you didn’t.
There wasn’t enough of us at that time to be a public nuisance There was no outcry about us being on the sidewalks and such as that. Not like today.
Enough about the past and how my generation invented skateboards. When the wheels became a plastic type material that is when it really took of. Today the kids look for anyplace to ride and practice their tricks. They can do some amazing things with a skateboard. It is even a professional sport these days you know.
So here is the problem. The skateboarders have no respect for the signs prohibiting skateboarding in certain areas. I believe that pretty much that is the fault of the parents. They haven’t taught their children respect. Home is where it should be taught. One way to teach it is for the parents to show respect for the laws and each other. Do you speed when your children are in the car? Do you cuss another driver because they exhibited behavior you find disrespectful to you? Do you think your child notices and takes notice of your behavior? Do you talk bad about neighbors and relatives when the children are around. Do you and your wife occasionally scream at each other in front of the children. All of these actions teaches your children dis-respect. After all it is usually the parents that children seem to emulate.
Here is the other part of the problem. The city needs to be proactive in providing facilities for such activity. There are several commercial parks in the area but no public park. However, an article in the ExploreBaltimoreCounty website shows there is community support for such parks
The area of the altercation sure looks like some kind of a skateboard park could be constructed for the youth to be able to enjoy their sport without being in the way and breaking the law. Why not? Seems like there is plenty of space available. These are our future citizens we are talking about. Shouldn’t we show respect for them and their needs? We have built several skateboard parks in our little town. Only make sense. If you have ball parks and soccer fields, why not a skateboard park.
OK enough of my tirade. Just watch the video below and think about your opinion of what you have seen. Who showed the most disrespect to the other. Was it the policeman, or was it the teenager? In my opinion the policeman could have done a better job. In fact his behavior was so bad that he should be ordered to anger management training.
